Several weeks ago on our blog, we featured an article called ‘Wine Taking Over as Perfect Pizza Pairing Drink‘ which listed several of our most popular types of pizzas and a wine pairing to go with each. While this information was helpful to a number of our customers, there were several that asked us to make the same recommendations for beer pairings so they too could optimize the flavors of both their pizza and their beer while dining on their favorite Sardella’s pie.
So, at the behest of our customers we present this pizza and beer pairing list:
Cheese Pizza
Beer Pairing: Extra Special Bitter
The simple flavors of the cheese and sauce are brought out by this malt-forward beer. The bitter flavor of the beer will bring out the saltiness of the cheese leaving a buttery (but not greasy) texture on the tongue.
Beer Pairing: Black IPA
The strong peppery taste of pepperoni needs a full-flavored beer to stand alongside it without getting washed out, and a black IPA fits the bill. The spicy hops and the bitterness of the roast enhances the pepperoni flavor rather than watering it down.
All Meat Pizza
Beer Pairing: Scotch Ale
The all meat pizza can be a tricky slice to pair with due to the many flavors and textures of its multiple meats. A Scotch ale is a perfect beer to bring out the sweet, salty, spicy, and savory flavors with just one bite, and yet the beer itself is malty enough to stand up to these flavors and blend rather than washing out.
Ham and Pineapple Pizza
Beer Pairing: Blonde Ale
With two strong, yet distinctly different flavors in the toppings of this slice it may seem difficult to complete the flavors of both acidic fruit and deep salt – but a blonde ale does the trick. The malt tones down the acidity of the pineapple while bringing the salty notes out at the end to cleanse the palate.
BBQ Chicken Pizza
Beer Pairing: Rauchbier
Think smoky. The sweet, caramelized taste in the BBQ sauce pairs perfectly with the smoky campfire undertones of this beer, adding in a little authentic grilling flavor.
Veggie Pizza
Beer Pairing: IPA
There are countless IPAs available to bring out certain flavors on a veggie pizza – think hops and lean greens to bring out the crispness of the greens and the tang of onions. The bitterness of the beer will wash away any cheesy oiliness and leave you with a healthy and fresh feeling palate.
